Mangalore residents blame forcible conversions for violence

The coastal town of Mangalore in Karnataka, which is known as the Garden City under Coconut Groves has been under fire since the past three days.

Incidents of violence, places of worship being desecrated and not to mention the damage to public property -- Mangalore has seen it all and has been on national headlines.

The issue here -- conversions as alleged by right-wing Hindu activists who went on a rampage on Sunday. Places of worship and churches were under attack. The following day, some Christians took out a protest against the incident and had to bear the wrath of the police when the protest turned violent.

Mangalore has never had a history of clashes between Christians and Hindus. Residents of Mangalore, who are obviously saddened by the fact that the peaceful co-existence between the Hindus and Christians who are 1,64,982 in number has been disrupted, however blame forcible conversion to be the cause. Not only the local residents, but even the Bajrang Dal and the Mangalore Diocesan say that the violence had broken out against forcible conversions.

The target of the Bajrang Dal is however not the church. They say that they have vented their anger against the members of the New Life Fellowship Trust, which had been indulging in forcible conversion and also distribution of seditious literature, a fact that the trust denies.

Alwyn Colaco, pastor of the full Gospel Church, told rediff.com that he is very upset with the developments.

"The allegation that New Life is into forcible conversions is untrue. We are not into forcible conversions, but if people want to embrace another religion then what is wrong in that. If conversions were to be banned, then every reformer of a religion is an outlaw. People are coming to us because of our Gospel and the people want to test us because of the message that we spread. There are no inducements given for conversions," Colaco said. (Everyone knows that Christians Missionaries many fraudulent ways to convert Hindus. So what Mr. Colaco is saying is totally false!)

Looking at the developments that have taken place in Mangalore since the past three days, it is evident that the Diocese too has come down heavily on forcible conversions. Colaco points out that the Catholic church has not come to their rescue because they are afraid.

"The Catholics have much at stake. They run several institutions and if they come to our defence then they risk their property being damaged. We completely understand what they feel and are not upset that they have disowned us," Colaco said.

The protests have stopped for now, but the big question is whether peace will remain regarding this issue in Mangalore.

Senior advocate Vikram Hegde said that this issue has been brewing in Mangalore for some time.

"Breakaway groups such as the Bajrang Dal, Shrirama Sena and others have been indulging in moral policing for quite some time now. Now they have taken on conversions. If the government acts against this then I do not see any reason for this issue to continue," Hegde said. (Why don't Mr. Hegde tell Missionaries to stop forced conversion of Hindus, so that such incidents will not occur?)

Colaco said they have been called by the government of Karnataka to sit across the table with both Hindu activists and the Catholics to sort out their differences.

"Why should we go there? We have no faith in this government and what justice can we expect from a government which supports the actions of the Sangh Parivar," Colaco said. (BJP Government of Karnataka should impose ban on forced conversion of Hindus!)

dear brother,

dear brother,
u are very much right in saying there is no justification for violence, but that doesnt mean we just keep on watching the wrong things with our arms crossed.it is an open secret that socially opressed, financially backward ppl are converted by offering inducements,it is partially our fault we should have looked upon our ppl,but when some of our ppl do help they are called communal or by some other names.if the missionaries are so concerned about the downtrodden ppl then why only our country there are ppl suffering everywhere let them just try what they are doing here in any islamic country but there they will never dare to go coz there if they try converting which is their ultimate goal they know they will be shot dead...

There is very little point

There is very little point in turning to violence to stop this.
The problem is that we are not taking these messages to common people in the right manner. Whoever reads the newspaper assumes that Hindu militants are torturing other religions. I'm an R.S.S activist and used to communicate these conversion incidents to my colleges, surprisingly I understood that they are very much concerned and immediately started praising R.S.S and BJP for their effort to protect us (common Hindus), but I can only do this to few hundred people. We need to be innovative here to reach the Mass. Today people are united or want to be united. Bring out the Christian missionary activities in India and how they are taking about India and our culture abroad. There can be very simple and humble way to project our concerns and ask people to get united. Today Congress is no more a single party who can win elections, because of the injustice they have done to us (Hindus), history will not forget this. But if we want everyone to listen to us, make things non-violent and educate the Hindu community.
Can we get at least in Karnataka, reach every Hindu home and explain our stand and please try to understand the point that Muslims are failed in our state due to their aggressive stand, do we want to follow the same.

let it be understood that

let it be understood that these days there are no forced conversions
anywhere in the world. India is no exception. Those who assert that the poor, innocent and ignorant of India are being forced to accept Christianity are blatant liars.
A few, very few educated and well-to-do men and women
convert to another faith when they do not find solace in the faith of their
ancestors. We have plenty of cases of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh
inter-marriages. However, the largest number of converts come from
communities discriminated against. The outstanding example was that of Dalit leader Bhimrao Ambedkar who led his Mahar community to embrace Buddhism
because they were discriminated against by upper caste Hindus. This is also true of over 90 per cent of Indian Muslims whose ancestors being lower caste embraced Islam which gave them equal status. That gives lie to the often-repeated slander that Islam made converts by the sword. 'An equally large number of people converted out of gratitude. They were
neglected, ignorant and poor. When strangers came to look after them, opened
schools and hospitals for them, taught them, healed them and helped them to stand on their own feet to hold their heads high, they felt grateful towards
their benefactors. Most of them were Christian missionaries who worked in remote villages and brought hope to the lives of people who were deprived of
hope.
'To this day, Christian missionaries run the best schools, colleges and
hospitals in our country. They are inexpensive and free of corruption. They
get converts because of the sense of gratitude they generate. Can this be
called forcible conversion? Why don't the great champions of Hinduism look
within their hearts and find out why so many are disenchanted by their
pretensions of piety? Let them first set their own houses in order, purge
the caste system out of Hindu society and welcome with open arms all those who wish to join them. No one will then convert from Hinduism to another
religion.

If there are wrongful

If there are wrongful conversions going on, there is provision under our laws to address them. Is vandalising churches and attacking Christians the answer? In Orissa, helpless women and children in orphanages were burnt to death. There can be no justification for violence. How can we counter the argument of Islamic fundamentalists who attribute their acts to Babri Masjid, Gujarat riots etc.?
