MADURAI:
Two persons were given life sentence and four persons were acquitted by
the Madurai District Court here on Monday in a case related to the
murder of Hindu Makkal Katchi functionary A R Kalidass.

Kalidass
of Sellur was the state vice president of Hindu Makkal Katchi. He was
murdered on June 21, 2005 when he was riding a bicycle in Ismailpuram
here.

Teppakulam police had registered a case against Mannar
Maideen (30), Ibrahim Shah (25), Muhammed Anish (25), Maideen Peer
(26), Hakkim alias Karuvaayan (29), Sheikh Allaudin (29) and Bilal
Mallick. The case was heard in the Fast Track Court I. Since Billal
Mallick was a minor, he was lodged in the juvenile home and the case
was heard separately.

Thirtyfive witnesses, including Kalidass'
son Balachander, were examined. Twentysix certified documents and 33
certified materials were produced before the court. Meanwhile, Muhamed
Anish had obtained bail and the others were lodged in the Madurai jail.

All
of them were produced before the court today. When asked whether they
had anything to say to the court, all of them said that they were not
connected with the murder of Kalidass in any way and requested minimum
sentence to be awarded to them.

 Judge
Jacob Jayakumar pronounced the sentence saying that since the accused,
Ibrahim Shah, and Muhamed Anish had too much of attachment to their
religion, they had developed hatred towards Kalidass which resulted in
the murder. Hence, these two were given life sentence and a fine of Rs
5,000.Mannar Maideen, Maideen Peer, Hakkim alias Karuvayan,
Sheikh Allaudin were acquitted since the allegation was not proved
beyond doubt.
