HPI: Christian Institutions Top List of NGOs Operating in India in 2007

NEW DELHI, INDIA, December 27, 2007 (HPI note): Each year, the Government of India's Ministry of Home Affairs releases a report (URL above) entitled, "Receipt of Foreign Contributions by Voluntary Associations." Most of the donations go toward relief work, rural development, medicine and education. "Maintenance of priests/preachers/other religious functionaries" is 15th on the list of purposes, receiving $21 million dollars of all foreign funding. Of the fifteen top donor agencies given in a chart on page 20, eight are Christian, seven are secular and none are Hindu:

The following is a brief description of each organization:
Gospel Fellowship Trust India, USA, $57 million, here. The URL says that, "Gospel Missions of India (GMI) is an IRS approved non-profit, tax exempt, religious organization based in Michigan, USA to support Christian workers and ministries in India associated with the Brethren assemblies. GMI is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) and Christian Ministries Management Association, both of which stand for financial integrity and public accountability. GMI stays abreast of the work of the missionaries and ministries in India to ensure that gifts are faithfully invested for the Lord's work."
Gospel for Asia, $34 million, here, Gospel for Asia is a Texas-based Christian missionary organization whose, "Focus and goal as a ministry is to reach the 2.7 billion people in the 10/40 window who have never heard about the love of God. In India alone, there are over 500,000 villages with no Gospel witness."
Plan International, UK, $28 million, here, The URL explains, "Plan is a child-centred community development organization with no religious and political affiliations, enabling families and communities in the poorest countries to make lasting improvements to the lives of their children. Plan's work is made possible because more than a million people across the world support us through sponsoring children. In doing so they benefit many other children, and entire communities. Plan's also supported by the UK Government's Department of International Development, the European Union and partners and governments worldwide."
Foundation Vicent E. Ferrer Alicante and Madrid Spain - $26 million and $19 million (the organization occurs twice in the contribution list), here - Until 1970 Vicente Ferrer was a Jesuit missionary associated with the Society of Jesus. In 1996, the Foundation was created in Spain to promote economic development in rural India by organizing small cooperatives to dig wells, form seed banks and irrigate small plots as well as building community hospitals and schools. The foundation is viewed as a cooperative between a sponsoring Spanish family and a corresponding family in India.
Christian Aid, UK, $20 million, here, This organization was formed after World War II by British and Irish Church leaders to help European refugees. In the 1950's Christian Aid began responding to emergencies in Africa and Asia and in the 1980's Christian Aid received government funding. In the 1990's Christian Aid "Became one of the first aid agencies to highlight 'unsexy' and complex global economic issues. Our celebrated Banking on the Poor campaign alerted people to the need to cancel Third World debt, while the culpability of the World Trade Organization and International Monetary Fund was exposed in our 'Who Runs the World' campaign. We were not afraid to confront governments and challenge the rules of the day that said charities should be apolitical. This resolve helped change government trade policy and establish the Fairtrade Foundation - our campaigning works Christian Aid was also quick to respond to humanitarian crises in Rwanda, the Middle East and, at the end of the decade, working across ethnic and religious divides in Serbia, Bosnia and Kosovo."
Miseror Mozartstrasse, Germany, $19 million, here, Miseror is affiliated with the Catholic Church in Germany. The organization has mandated to, "Fight the causes of hardship and misery as manifested chiefly in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America in the forms of hunger, disease, poverty and other forms of human suffering thus enabling the people affected to lead a life of human dignity and to promote justice, freedom, reconciliation and peace in the world."
Oxfam, UK, $19 million, here, Oxfam UK is an affiliate of Oxfam International. Oxfam International is described as a confederation of 13 organizations working together with over 3000 partners in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. Oxfam UK is known for specializing in crisis aid such as clean drinking water and tents.
Novib, Netherlands, $18 million, here, The URL says, "Oxfam Novib is and will remain an independent organization, rooted in the Netherlands. Twelve independent Oxfams are collaborating, dedicating their efforts to the five basic rights of people throughout the world: the right to an honest income, to drinking water, to healthcare and education, to safety and to one's own opinion, for women and minorities too. Cooperation takes place in development projects, emergency aid and campaigns that bring a just world without poverty closer.
Deptt for International Devpt (DFID), UK, $15 million, here, Represented by both the Cabinet and the House of Commons, the 1997 White Pater on International Development describes the focus of DFIB as, "A commitment to the Millennium Development goals. Much of this involves direct poverty reduction work, through our development activities, and work with multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, the United Nations and the European Union."
Kindemothilfe, Germany, $14 million, Kindemothilfe was founded in 1992 and encourages monthly sponsorship of a needy child in a third world country. The sponsorship of 60 marks a month is transferred to the native churches and Christian organizations of third world countries and from there a welfare organization called the 'child help in need' coordinates the cash dispensing for meals, clothes, and medicine.
Save the Children Fund, UK, $13 million, here, This humanitarian organization was founded by two sisters at the beginning of the 20th century to assist starving children in Berlin and Vienna. Under the initial leadership of Eglantyne Jebb the ideals spread worldwide and inspired the present UN Convention on the rights of the child.
Manos Unidas, Spain, $12 million, here, Manos Unidas, "Is a Catholic development organization which fights against poverty, hunger, malnutrition, lack of education and underdevelopment as well as against their causes: injustice, unequal share of goods and opportunities between people and countries, ignorance, prejudice and lack of solidarity. The purpose of its work is to contribute to the full development of the countries of the South, to take an active role in the fight against famine and inequality and to support those countries in their process of liberation from poverty and dependency."
Missio, Germany, $12 million, here, Missio is the German Catholic Bishops' Agency for International Mission Work and has been known to campaign against sex tourism and child abuse. The main site is in German.
Population Service International, USA, $12 million, here, The URL says that, "PSI is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that harnesses the vitality of the private sector to address the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in more than 60 developing countries. With programs in malaria, reproductive health, child survival and HIV, PSI promotes products, services and healthy behavior that enable low-income and vulnerable people to lead healthier lives. Products and services are sold at subsidized prices rather than given away in order to motivate commercial sector involvement. PSI is the leading nonprofit social marketing organization in the world."

After having worked with some Para Church organizations and having taught in various Bible colleges and Seminaries. When I was serving as a Pastor in Baptist Church, I was reading and meditating on the Prophetical Books of the Bible that in year 2005 God gave me a clear vision and a call to be the Watchman for His Church (Eze.33:7). In preparation for that call he brought me to Nagpur (the geographical Center of India) through a Mission, where I served as Director Leadership Development, during my tenure God continued to confirm the call by taking me all over India to show me the dire need of the various Churches to be Challenged to “live” for Christ and serve Him the way He desires. In obedience to that call I resigned from Mission India and took up the challenge by faith. And since then God has been using me and my wife to challenge and equip believers of various churches. Response had been overwhelming, thus we some likeminded people met together, and Prayed for many days and in God’s Guidance formed “Karuna Bharat”.

We want to express you that the Oliyagam Trust is the outcome of our lived experience with our poor rural and slum region, people and our critical observation of the reality for the past 13 years. The pain and agony, poverty and starvation, ignorance, sickness, disability and death are the every day experience of the rural and slum community at our target villages. Due to poverty education has become far reachable to their child and the people. Hence due to various reasons the children are forced to discontinue their primary study and come to the street which leads to drop-out, children labour and begging profession and they are facing other form of untold sufferings.
Keeping in view of growing proems to the restituted and deserving children our Oliyagam organization is administering both homes for poorest children. 30 female children and 36 male children are staying in two separate locations near by Madurai, a tourist place called as temple city on the way of going to Kodaikanal-Tourism place. All children are freely fed-well, educated, clothed, medicated and accommodated. Our main goal is to elevate the life of these children for their all round development in their future life till they stand on their own effort which kind of chances given to these children may do so for others in their turn irrespective of caste, creed or nationality.
We therefore will kindly request you to have your kind vision on these poorest children and to render your helping hands to meet out the needs of the children and elevate them since we have no any other source unless we collect the funds from same kind hearted people like you. You are always welcome to visit our Oliyagam children’s homes and to wipe away the tears from their eyes.

I really apreciate your concern and love for India. But I am a little bit confused on your concept on India. Hinduism is never a religion in India as per the Vedas and Upanishads, which are the basic doctrinal stands for any Hindu. If it is, then it is always a minority as no one can include any tribal man within this category ( Read Kancha Ilayya ). If you love India, you need to concentrate on developing your country, not to shed blood of your brother Indian, simply on the basis of accepting a different faith or propagating the same.
As an Indian in Words and deeds, I am 100% proud of my nation. My concern is on the thousands of children who dont have food and shelter, the growing disparity between rich and the poor, murders on the basis of dowry system, return of the caste system with full potential, corrupt political system, valueless education etc... etc... and etc... I personally see thousands of lives are freed from poverty and death through the Indian Christian missionaries. I personally know many Christians who defend our nation with all their power and strength, better than any strong RSS guy. And above all as much as I have learned from the sacred texts of all religions, I understand the doctrine of Love and the respect to each culture presented by Jesus Christ are unique.
So my dear friends, concentrate on facing the poverty of India first. And by your works people will follow your path, if it is right. Otherwise you may be giving a reason to believe the common man that Christians are the right people who are suffering for the right ideology attacked by a group of brutual people. The LAMB Society with the partnership of Caruna Bal Vikas, Chennai is running a Child Development Centre in the name of “Phoebe Child Development Centre” to develop the children whose parents are under poverty line (poorest of the poor) in the area of physical, spiritual and social activity. Besides this child development centre is looking after the welfare both in the terms of health and education. Education is being imparted regularly with qualified teaching staff in addition to regular school attendance in outside institutions. The project started with 93 children before last year and by the grace of god this project was hiked to 167 this year. The partner is very much inspired by our administration and quality of hygienic being supplied to children, the additional sanction has been accorded. We are feeding the children in all aspects viz; supplying good nutritional food, study materials, medical facility, educational facilities, birthday gifts, x-massgifts, uniforms, clothes, and other hygienic supplies withal support, we are maintaining the project in an outstanding way so as to enable all the poor children in particular school drops outs are encouraged in studies and the support is being continued in all ways so that the child get in all future Endeavour’s.
By the activities being developed the project authorities came forward to sanction further two projects to the poor children and asking us to establish the centres for development of poor children. But we are helpless since the centre establishment involves huge financial aspects for infrastructure and accommodation. They are ready to sanction further 200 children for project but our hands are empty in this aspect. We are putting the requirements in our daily prayers before the foot of God to sponsor permanent donors / contributors for the establishment of projects and also the various programmes being designed.
We request all the viewers to stretch their blessed hands to contribute their mite in the above situation so as to enable us to help the poorest of the poor who are in dire need of help in all the times to come.

SUBJECT: AWARENESS AGAINST CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
Doosti Pakistan is the only organization that is working for the education and rehabilitation of special children (deaf and mute) child and women rights and their trafficking, since the year 1996 in NWF Province Pakistan. It is put forth with submission the organization is a registered with Social Welfare Department Government of NWFP under the act 1961, registration no DSW/NWFP/2196.
Due to the absence of an effective law in Pakistan, especially NWF Province about child’s right, the cases of child sexual abuse are increasing at a high speed. Only in the first 3 months this year (2008) 829 cases of child sexual abuse were recorded. In the NWFP and Balochistan Province there is not even a single law for the protection of Child’s right, due to which they don’t have access to justice. On 12 January Government of Punjab passed a child’s right law, similarly in 1955 Government of Sindh had also passed a law for the protection of child’s right. But these laws mostly give protection to children in prisons.
Unfortunately every Provincial Government of NWFP and Balochistan has failed to give any law regarding the protection of the child’s right. Up till now, for the children, under the Pakistan Panel Code 1860 English law is being followed. After the “Hadood Ordinance 1979” different sections of Pakistan Panel Code have been discarded, due to which the protection given to the children has also been taken off. Section 372 and 373 of Pakistan Panel Code were especially on child sexual abuse but they have been discarded from it, due to which the sexually abused children suffer a lot in getting justice.
In the first 3 months (January to March) of 2008, 829 cases of child sexual abuse were recorded, among them 319 were boys and 510 girls, only 82 cases were registered.
For the purpose of public awareness and to help the Government of NWFP to make a guide line regarding the protection of child’s right in the Province. Doosti Pakistan wants to carry out a 6 months awareness project against child sexual abuse and help the victims to raise their voice for justice, and establish the Child Welfare and Protection Bureau in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
