For many days I've witnessed the drama surrounding M.F. Hussein. Though I try to take things in the right perspective but in this case I've just not been able to understand the Hindu liberal psyche.... If an outsider follows the liberals especially on the English media (print & electronic) he would think that Hussein is some simple poor soul who is being unnecessarily harassed by the hindu extremists because he's a Muslim.. It would appear that he had done nothing to hurt anybody's sensibilities and was innocently following his passion of art when Hindu hooligans decided that his days in this country are numbered.. I've heard many opinions from journalists, socialites and artists and they just ask 'What had Hussein done wrong that he is being victimized at the age of 95?' Let's clear one thing - Yes, India is a democratic country with every citizen having a freedom of speech... Now how will we define freedom of speech? Does this mean that a person has the right to paint someone's mother in nude? We hindus worship Saraswati & Durga and call them 'Maa'.. We see absolute divinity in their form.. How would these liberals feel if someone paints their mother in nude? There is a very respected English journalist admired nationally who has never shied away from calling Islam an intolerant religion.. But I was surprised to see his article in a leading English newspaper of which he is the Managing Editor. In his article he defended Hussein saying he knows him personally to be a secular... I asked him on his bog web-site how he could defend him when he has offended the feelings of so many Hindus.. I told him that just because he knows him personally to be a secular doesn't mean Hussein has the right to hurt other's feelings... His post in reply to my question was that Hussein had every right to offend us in the name of freedom of speech... I then again posted a question for him saying he had all the freedom to paint our deities decently and we wouldn't have issued a religious decree to kill him like the one Muslims issued when a cartoonist had just drawn a caricature of Mohammed. I asked him how Hussein would've felt if someone had painted his mother in the nude without his knowledge and would've then displayed his nude mother's painting publicly. This journalist wrote back saying the problem is that if someone paints my mother in nude, he is not offending me but he is violating her right to privacy... I then wrote back asking if it's ok to violate somebody's right to privacy in the name of freedom of speech.. Then I asked him What is a child supposed to do if his mother's nude painting is displayed publicly without her permission and that mother is not physically present to defend her right to privacy and that child worships that mother and sees the divinity of god in her form.... What is that child supposed to do? I then asked the journalist that would he really not be offended if his own mother is painted nude and the said painting is displayed publicly?.. I asked him to think clearly and tell me the truth.... Well, that journalist who champions the freedom of speech didn't reply to my post and in fact omitted that post... These are the ills of this society.. Now some Hindus may not believe in the existence of Maa Saraswati and Durga... It's fine... We cannot force them to believe in things as that goes against the basic concept of Vedas.... But there are many hindus who worship these deities as their own mother and god... What about their sensibilities?.... Is there anyone who'll listen to their grievances?...No, I don't think so because as soon as someone will speak up for them he'll be branded a communalist and religious fanatic.... Nice secular democracy we live in!.... Muslims can openly announce rewards of crores for the head of the Danish cartoonist without being condemned forget about being taken to court but we Hindus cannot even condemn a genuine insult to our faith... Before we cry hoarse about the treatment meted out to Hussein, has he not repeatedly insulted the feelings of these Hindus... We excused him once thinking that he's an idiot... But in the name of Hindu tolerance we cannot allow him to keep repeating his lunacy... Why he had to paint them nude... And if he had to paint a female form in nude for some artistic aesthetics, he could have given it some other name... And what treatment has been meted out to him?.... Some aggrieved people had filed cases against him in the court of law... Was he ever physically assaulted... If he believed in his innocence, he should have faced the law and defended himself... But Hussein chose to run away to hide behind a mid-eastern monarch who I'm sure will give him full artistic freedom even if Hussein's work offends Islam.... Well, if he goes, to hell with him... I'll call Hussein's exit 'GOOD RIDDANCE' |

They'll cry hoarse if there is any justified discussion regarding Article 371 and Uniform Civil Code... Whereas we hindus don't speak when their Imams and leaders like Zakir Naik give provocative statements... Now, we hindus have to think deeply and see whether our tolerance is being read as weekness....
