RSS to undertake 'save Ganga' campaign

Lucknow, Jan 9 (IANS): Hoping to rally its supporters and various factions, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) will next month launch a 99-day 'save Ganga' tour from Gangasagar where the river merges into the sea all the way up to its source in Gangotri.

One of the high points of the campaign will be on Feb 17 when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani and RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan will participate in a special yagna, or fire ritual, in Varanasi.

Advani is also expected to address a rally on the banks of the river on the day.

Hindu clerics, including the four Shankaracharyas, yoga guru Swami Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar as well as Ramjanmbhoomi Trust president Mahant Nritya Gopal Das will join the Ganga Sanskriti Pravah Yatra.

"The yatra is a part of the Ganga Mukti Abhiyan taken up by us as a mission to save the Ganga from further degradation," national secretary of the RSS outfit Ganga Mahasabha, Acharya Vishnu, told IANS over the phone from Varanasi.

He said "gross neglect and rampant corruption" at all levels in different state governments was largely responsible for the unabated pollution of the country's most sacred river.

"We have reason to believe that billions of rupees have been pilfered in the name of ridding Ganga of pollution; this campaign is aimed at exposing this as well," he added.

From Varanasi, the yatra will proceed to Allahabad, Kanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Rishikesh and move upstream to Devprayag, Tehri, Uttarkashi and finally Gangotri.

Good initiative.. But what

Good initiative.. But what is the objective of this campaign.. What are the actional items that we expect out of it? What are the steps that we feel to save and clean ganga?

Will this campaign generate that intellectual discussion? If so, who is going to conduct & organise such session?

Ultimately, what we need is to accomplish our objective..

About two years ago, I was

About two years ago, I was personally involved in Uttaranchal with the blessings of Swami Chidanand Saraswati- Muni ji of Pamarth Niketan, on the welfare of stray cows and Ganga water.
We were involved with Swajal department of the Govt of Uttaranchal on Ganga cleaning and Chief Secretary Shri Ramachandran on the subject of taking care of stray cows in Haridwar and Rishikesh.
Regarding Ganga water, our strategy was very simple. Just take action to prevent any sewers from the villages and towns located on the banks of Ganga in the stretch between Gangotri and Rishikesh., from discharging in to Ganga. If you do not pollute in the first place, there will be no need for cleaning. Ganga can clean itself if man does not overburden the task of Ganga by discharging huge big sewers in to Ganga. Swajal was willing to participate in providing alternative human excreta disposal systems in the villages on the banks of Ganga. Sulabh type of soak pit system can not be implemented in this area, because the geology of the land varies vastly from place to place. Land does not have uniform water soaking ability as found in plains. We needed help in mapping the Geology of the land and alternative toilet designs. Poor country like India does not attract scientists for such ordinary tasks like geological mapping of our land. Our geologists only want to search for Oil Gas or Gold. UCOST ( Uttaranchal Council of Science and Technology) tried their utmost to get help from knowledge institutions like IIT R and CBRI at Roorkee. I am myself an engineering graduate from Rorkee of 1955 batch. I wrote in details and met the then Director of IITR Prof Prem Vrat ji more than once to persuade him to render some technical help. But all my driving up and down to Roorkee, Dehradun, Rishikesh on my personal initiative and expense was of no use.
Lack of interest by our scientists and latest knowledge inputs prevented us from making any headway. These are the areas that Shri Advani ji will have to lay stress upon. If we want to keep Ganga clean. Do not pollute it in the first place. If you do not pollute there will be no need to clean. Ganga can take care of herself.
But if successive Governments do not make provision of thousands of crores of money to clean Ganga, how will all the corrupt intermediaries make their living? One need not be a super genius to point out that if you do not pollute in the first place, there will be no need to clean.
This is where Sangh and VHP has its work cut out spread word in masses that it is sin to pollute any river and Ganga of all. And our scientists and engineers to give practical help establishing methods for decentralized disposal of human waste, instead of the Western Flush and Forget modern systems.
On cows I will like to comment separately because it is a much larger issue of greatest national importance to our Farmers and welfare of our mother land..
Subodh Kumar.

Dear Subodh Kumar ji, Its

Dear Subodh Kumar ji,

Its encouraging to hear your project. Definitely that can be a role model for other areas.. Not Just ganga, but the whole of India's river is to be prevented from pollution.. we need lot of intellectual discussion on this area.
