BJP Govt to renovate Hindu temples in Karnataka

BANGALORE, July 16, 2008: The Government has decided to renovate 20,000 temples, which are in dilapidated condition. The Muzrai Department would renovate temples with the financial support of Non-Resident Indians and philanthropists, Minister for Muzrai and Housing S.N. Krishnaiah Setty told presspersons on Wednesday.

There were no archaks in a majority of the temples and daily poojas were being conducted in about 20,000 temples belonged to the Muzrai Department in the State. A few temples have been generating an annual income of Rs. 100 crore, the minister said.

With the involvement of film stars, sportspersons and NRIs, a campaign would be launched soon in Bangalore to raise funds for renovation works of temples. The local citizens and leaders have been asked to submit detail estimate plans containing information about temple history, location, funds required for renovation, to Deputy Commissioners and tahsildars in all districts. Out of 34,000 temples, only 185 temples have sufficient funds for maintenance.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would lead a delegation to participate in the U.S.-based Association of Kannada Kootas of Americas Kannada conference in Chicago, US. The meet will commence from August 29. The delegation would appeal to the NRIs from Karnataka to donate funds for taking up renovation works of temples, the Minister said.

Hundis (donation boxes)

The department has decided to electronic "hundis" in all temples. The first electronic "hundi" will be established at the Banashankari temple in the City soon. Tenders would be invited to set up such "hundis". The cost of each "hundi" would be around Rs. 1.5 lakh, he said.

On encroachment of lands belonged to temples, the minister said a squad would be constituted to recover such lands.

Rs. 80 crore Master Plan to renovate Kukke temple

BANGALORE: The State Government has prepared a Rs. 80 crore Master Plan for renovation of the Kukke Subramanya temple located in rural village called Subramanya in the Western Ghats of the State, about 105 km from the coastal town Mangalore.

The temple is one of the famous pilgrimage sites in the state. A sum of Rs. 80 crore of the temple funds would be utilized for renovation work of the temple, construction of guesthouse, commercial complex, booking counter, bus-stand and other facilities. The work would be launched soon and would be completed in a year, Minister for Muzrai S. N. Krishnaiah Setty told presspersons on Wednesday.

Kukke Subramanya is on the bank of river Kumaradhara. There are quite a few guest houses at Kukke. The funds would be utilized for construction of more guest houses for providing accommodation for visiting pilgrims from the other parts of the country and abroad, he said.

Kukke Subramanya was in the news last year when cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Utthappa and film celebrities such as Shilpa Shetty and the Kapoor family visited the temple.

Tirupathi Temple

A decision has also been taken to construct a 1,000 room guesthouse on 7.5 acres, land adjoining the Lord Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala in Tirupathi, for providing accommodation for pilgrims visiting the temple from Karnataka.

Mr Setty said that the land dispute between the State Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government has been resolved. An agreement would be signed soon between two states for construction of the guesthouse. Thousands of devotees have come forward to donate funds for the construction of the guesthouse which would be built in a span of two years, the Minister said.
The land dispute had come to the surface over the past decade after the Karnataka Government stated that the land belonged to it and the Andhra Pradesh Government claimed that the land was taken over by that Government in 1958.

The 7.5-acre land was donated by the then Maharaja of Mysore and after the formation of the State the land became a Government property. Over the last few years, the State Government has given a narrow piece of this land to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams to widen the road adjoining the Lord Venkateshwara Temple.

'Advani most favoured for PM post'

NEW DELHI: The UPA will win 183 to 193
seats on a vote base of 33 per cent in the Lok Sabha if general elections are
held today, said an opinion poll conducted for a news magazine.

The
opposition NDA is tipped to get 179 to 189 seats on a 32 per cent vote share,
according to the poll conducted by CVOTER among 9,604 respondents across 54 Lok
Sabha seats on July 9 and 10 in the aftermath of Left parties withdrawing
support to the UPA government.

The survey also covered issues like
the performance of the Manmohan Singh government, best PM candidates and whether
the nuclear is pro-India.

The BSP, ruling party in Uttar Pradesh, is
expected to get between 46 and 56 seats on a vote share of six per cent while on
the basis of same vote share the Left Front has been predicted to get 37 to 47
seats.

On the basis of 9 per cent vote share, the Third Front is
likely to get 52 to 62 seats. "Others" are tipped to get 16 to 26 seats on a
vote share of 14 per cent.

BJP leader L K Advani gets the maximum
vote for Prime Minister's post with 17 per cent of those surveyed preferring
with Congress president Sonia Gandhi trailing him closely at 15 per cent and
Rahul Gandhi at 11 per cent.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been out
of active politics for quite some time now now, still gets 11 per cent and Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh comes the last at 9 per cent. 36 per cent of those
polled came under "Others/Can't Say" category.

On the controversial
Indo-American nuclear deal 42 per cent considered it pro-India, 23 per cent
anti-India while 35 said they cannot give an opinion. 31 per cent felt the Left
parties were right in withdrawing support on the deal while 40 per cent said no.

Navjot Sidhu seeks apology from Pranab, officials

Amritsar, July 3 (IANS) Member of Parliament Navjot
Singh Sidhu Thursday asked Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to seek
an apology from External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and initiate
breach of privilege proceedings against officials for ignoring him
during a function here last week.

In a letter to the Lok Sabha
speaker, Sidhu pointed out that the minister and the Ministry of
External Affairs (MEA) officials committed a blatant breach of protocol
by not allowing him to address the minister or even join the minister
and other dignitaries on the dais during the inauguration of a new
regional passport office here.

The passport office was inaugurated Saturday by Mukherjee in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

While
Mukherjee, Badal and others sat on the dais, Sidhu was made to sit
among the audience. He is the sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
member of the Lok Sabha from Amritsar.

'The treatment meted out
to me as a public representative and collective voice of over 1.5
million people of Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency is outrageously
insulting and denigrating,' Sidhu said in his strongly worded complaint.

He
lodged a strong protest against the conduct of ministry officials who,
he claimed, lowered the stature of an MP by excluding him from
discharging his role.

Sidhu demanded breach of privilege proceedings against the MEA officials and an unconditional apology from the minister.

The former cricketer turned MP said he had worked hard to get the passport office sanctioned for Amritsar.

Cong surrendered to communal forces: BJP

NEW DELHI: Whipping up the controversy
over land transfer to the Amranath Shrine Board as one of its key Hindutva
campaign planks for the coming Lok Sabha polls, Opposition BJP has called a
nationwide bandh on Thursday to protest against the Congress-led government's
"surrender to communal forces" in Jammu and Kashmir. It has demanded restoration
of the land to the shrine board.

With the entire Sangh Parivar coming
together in support of the issue to use it against ruling Congress — at
the Centre and in Srinagar — senior BJP leaders met on Tuesday and drew up
a resolution to spin it into a larger poll issue.

Calling the J&K
government's decision to revoke allotment of the land to the Amarnath Shrine
Board for development of facilities to pilgrims "a complete surrender to
fundamentalist and separatist forces", BJP accused Congress of demonstrated that
"it is one with fundamentalists in creating a theocratic environment in the
Kashmir Valley".

Picking up the issue in Bhopal and launching a sharp
attack on Congress, BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani on Tuesday said
that the contrast between the two coalition governments that Congress leads
— at the Centre and in Srinagar — exposes the fact that it has no
commitment to its electorate.

Congress has ignored its Left allies at
the Centre and decided to go ahead with the nuclear deal with US, Advani said,
despite warnings for two years that the Left will have to pull out if UPA goes
for the deal, and has created instability at the Centre.

The same party,
Advani pointed out, succumbed to PDP’s threat of pulling out of a
government in Srinagar, whose tenure gets over in the next four months. The PM
said that he had assured American president George Bush on the deal, Advani
pointed out, asking the PM in the context on whether he had any concern about
his assurance to the nation to provide a stable government for its full term,
and also whether he believed in any assurance towards the Amarnath
yatra.

Adding another Hindutva element to the poll campaign, Advani
committed that NDA will include in its poll manifesto, expanding of religious
tourism in the country.

London B-school hails GUVNL

VADODARA:
State governments across India suffer losses in crores of rupees while providing
electricity to its citizens.

And, Gujarat was no different
till a few years ago. Today, however, the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited
(GUVNL) is one of the very few power utilities in the country that boasts of
making a profit.

It is this
rags-to-riches story that the prestigious London Business School (LBS) of the
University of London has
recognised.

A case study on
GUVNL's turnaround, prepared by Dr Rakesh Mohan Joshi, chairperson at the Indian
Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi, has been selected as one among eight
winners in a global competition initiated by the Aditya V Birla India Centre at
LBS.

"The centre had invited
case studies on Indian firms from across the globe and had received 150
entries," Joshi told TOI over the phone from Delhi. Of these, eight case studies
were selected as development initiative winners for 2007. "It was not the
handsome amount that I received but the recognition that was
significant."

Joshi read about
Gujarat government's claim of 100 per cent rural electrification in a newspaper
article and started working on the case study last year . "I found it
interesting that at a time when 55 per cent of our rural populace has no access
to electricity, the Gujarat government claimed to provide electricity to all its
villages."

Apart from showing
how bureaucrats in other state electricity boards could start making profits,
Joshi's study also highlighted the comprehensive strategy used by the Gujarat
government to resolve the dilemma between reformist versus populist
measures.

Joshi highlighted how GUVNL went
from making losses of more than Rs 2,500 crore in 2000-2001 to making a
significant profit of Rs 220 crore in 2006-07. The study also stated that
despite being a politically sensitive issue, GUVNL successfully managed to split
into six separate companies from its original identity of Gujarat Electricity
Board and retrained 43,000 of its 50,000
employees.

Some of the other
cases that made it to the list with GUVNL's turnaround were merger of Air India
and Indian Airlines and Reliance Fresh Stores in food retailing.

What the BJP should do.

It is important to raise proper issues and fight for them. BJP fights for each and every issue. It is looking for Support from various Reigions. Honesty and Hardwork will make BJP strong. But is BJP really trying to instill this Behaviour in its Cadres, or is it just another party, another group of people. Does the BJP's heart beat for India?

What BJP should do is introspect and quiten down. BJP should support the Ruling party where it counts and fight where it does not count. It should currently even think of Supporting the Congress from outside till the Elections are due.

What BJP should do is keep the Intrest of the NATION topmost on its AGENDA.

BJP convenes special meeting on Amarnath issue

New Delhi, June 30: Perturbed over the decision
not to hand over forest land to the Amarnath shrine board, the BJP has
convened a special meeting of its office bearers in New Delhi on
Tuesday to discuss the issue.

The meeting will also review the political situation
in the state where the Congress-led coalition has been reduced to a
minority following withdrawal of PDP from the government, party sources
said.

They said the party, which views the Amarnath
development as "surrender of government machinery to separatist
forces", is planning a nation-wide agitation on the issue.

Reacting spontaneously to the decision not to hand
over 40 hectares of forest land to the board, the BJP and Sangh Parivar
outfits are observing bandh in Jammu on Monday and their supporters
have clashed with police at several places there.

The decision to transfer land to the Shri Amarnath
Shrine Board led to large scale protests and violence and saw
withdrawal of support by PDP creating a political crisis in the state.

BJP, VHP give shutdown call on Amarnath land issue

Jammu (PTI): The BJP and the VHP on
Sunday gave a shutdown call on Monday here and demanded the removal of
Amarnath shrine board chairman and Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra
after the board gave up its claim on the forest land allotted to it.

"We want removal of Vohra for
succumbing to pressure ... This is most shameful act as he has
succumbed to few protests of fundamentalists, political parties and
separatists," state BJP president Ashok Khajuria told reporters here.

The party gave a call for a shutdown here on Monday to protest the decision.

He said the BJP will soon launch a
nationwide agitation on the issue and demanded dismissal of the Ghulam
Nabi Azad-led Congress government in the state.

The shutdown call was supported by state VHP president Ramakant Dubey, who also demanded that Vohra be replaced.

BJP threatens nationwide protest over Shrine land

NEW DELHI/RANCHI: The main opposition
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday threatened to launch a
nationwide protest against the Jammu and Kashmir government's move to
retain with itself the 40 hectares of land it had given to the Amarnath
Shrine authorities.

BJP president Rajnath Singh in Ranchi said
his party would go for a nationwide agitation if the land were taken
back from the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

The party's
national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the central government
should rush in adequate paramilitary forces to control the situation in
the state.

“There is a need to send a strong message to the
separatist and anti-national forces to save the sovereignty of India
and autonomy of the SASB. Any surrender on this issue would only spark
off nationwide protests,” Naqvi said in a statement in New Delhi.

“The
decision to revoke the transfer of the land to the SASB will be
tantamount to an absolute surrender before separatist and terrorist
forces and compromising national unity, integrity and sovereignty,” he
said.

The state has been witnessing violent protests ever since
the government decided to give 40 hectares of forest land to the SASB
to provide facilities for Amarnath pilgrims.

Many parties and
Muslim organisations fear the board would make permanent structures on
the land. The People's Democratic Party (PDP), an ally of the ruling
Congress, withdrew from the government Saturday, creating a crisis.

“The
transfer of land to the temple board is a golden opportunity to provide
a healing touch to the minority Hindu community in the state. It will
help build bridges of harmony and understanding between the people of
Kashmir and the rest of the state and the country,” Naqvi said.

The
Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP demanded immediate removal of
Governor N N Vohra, alleging that he acted as an "agent of the
Congress" in handing back 40 hectares of forest land from the SASB.

The party has given a call for Jammu shutdown Monday.

Teesta on communalism, minority rights and politics

No one term can describe her activism. Her area of work is vast and
very risky also. Initially a full time journalist attached with
newspapers including The Indian Express, she took the road of activism
after being appalled by the horrors of the Bombay riots. She is Teesta
Setalvad, a relentless campaigner for the rights and privileges of
minorities- Dalits, Muslims and women.

In an exclusive interview with TwoCircles.net, she
spoke on matters as diverse as communalism, gender rights, pseudo-
secularism of political parties in India, minorities’ rights.

Muslim women & the community

But the only common thing present in all these areas is her
praiseworthy and courageous work which she has done in the last fifteen
years or so.

She mentions some of the cases in Uttar Pradesh on which she is
working, particularly the Shravasti mass rape case where the Muslim
women of the village were attacked and raped on 10th July 2007. The
case is pending in Allahabad High Court.

She points out that the issue of minority rights in a democracy is
very important that is why they are constitutionally guaranteed, but
“as important as that are the rights of the minority within the
minority,” referring to Muslim women. Women are doubly marginalized not
only in the socio-political power equations, but also in the areas very
essential for the progress of any community, education for instance.

She says the Muslim community will have to realize that half of its
part is women and these women are tremendous potential for that
community. You see the merit lists of all state board examination:
Muslim girls are doing well; they are doing well in every field. They
want to go ahead, and ready to compete with everyone.

So Teesta points out the urgent need for the community elders, the
religious leaders, and the family to seriously encourage the
participation of women in the affairs of the community. Because, she
points out, no community in the world history has ever been able to
progress without its women standing on its side.

Ghettoisation

She says her organisation has experimented with this idea in
Gujarat. In a city like Himmat Nagar, it has formed a joint force in
which Muslim, Dalit and Hindu women have worked together side by side.

Teesta Setalvad says that this intermingling is also very important
today because it helps rebuild the traditional linkages between the
communities, because these linkages and cultural bridges between
different faiths negate the communalist sentiments.

Communalism has broken the old associations and cultural linkages
between different communities which have been replaced by hatred,
suspicion and prejudice.

So Teesta argues that when one is working for the minority rights
one should also keep thinking of rebuilding those bridges, because
today the cities have been ghettoized. And ghettoisation is very
dangerous, because they are vulnerable to be easy targets, she says.

In this context Teesta refers to the recent statement made by Bal
Thackeray, in which he exhorted to the hindutva extremists to get in
the “mini Pakistans” (Muslim ghettos) and explode bombs there.

Teesta points out that if there is intermingling of people at the
residential levels and school level, for instance, then it will not
allow the prejudices and hatred to build up as easily as when they are
ghettoized.

Emerging Muslim middle class: a threat to commuanlists?

And that is one of the reasons why the communalists and the communal
violence push people back in the ghettos, because after the partition,
for the first time, Muslim middle class has emerged very strongly in
the last 20 -25 years. In every profession, be it legal profession or
medical, the class has made their presence felt.

Teesta further explains “and it wants its place under the sun, it
also wants its share of the cake, naturally. And it is this which is
the threat [for the communal forces].”

Because suddenly one sees Muslim not as a typical Maulana (as they
have always been represented in the popular and mainstream narratives,
although not even five percent of the Muslims are Maulanas).

But today people find a Muslim who is a woman, a lawyer , a doctor,
a software professional, an engineer, and who could be anybody like you
and me “but not the specimen out of your overheated imagination” and
that is what is the threat, because in today’s growing India every
section needs to have their share out of it.

After listening to Teesta Setalvad, one cannot help think that one
of the aims of the communalists behind the Gujarat riots of
February-March 2002 was to crush that threat posed by the emergence of
the strong Muslim middle class. And to a large extent they became
successful in their purpose.

Housing laws & segregation

Teesta refers to the housing laws which allow people to build
segregated colonies for different communities. And it is very
remarkable that even the Supreme Court of India is upholding these
rules. Two years back a Parsi from Ahmadabad won a case. He had argued
that the Parsi community did not want non-Parsis in their locality.

But Teesta points out that those laws have their roots in the
pre-independence British rule when every community’s right for housing
needed to be protected. “But under the Constitution they have inverse
and converse impact because they deny intermingling and thereby
discriminate one community against the other,” she says.

So Teesta Setalvad argues that we need to have a national debate,
and amend the housing laws because these violate the basic secular
nature and the spirit of the Constitution.

Minority rights and victimhood

She points out that the issue of the denial of the minority rights
cannot be seen in isolation. In the context of the erosion of the
secular identity and minority rights in the secular India unfortunately
for a variety reasons, it s not only Muslims whose right have eroded.
But also that of Dalit, the poor, and women.

“We should be clear about the fact that the Muslims are not the only
victim of this erosion, because victimhood beyond a point is also
destructive.”

“We need to fight for our rights. We need to convert our sense of
outrage into fighting for the right. But if we become victim of the
victimhood, then that can also be a very perverse logic…because that
may lead to the denial of the problems that might exist within us, for
instance on the discourse of terrorism, which is always a denial.”

Just as it is completely wrong to say that all the Muslims are
terrorists but at the same time the sensible section of the community
accepts that a small part of the youth of the community is getting
strayed.

She gives the example of the Jews, pointing out how the excessive
sense of victimhood can be horribly exploited and justified to
perpetrate the mass extermination and genocide of the innocent Muslims.

The same people who have been the victims of the worst possible
holocaust in which six million people had been massacred, have now
turned into aggressors. Teesta puts a very relevant question, “Can’t it
happen to the Muslims?” She herself answers: “It can happen to anyone
in the world, so we have to guard against that, we can not use our
victimhood to perpetrate genocide and mass extermination of innocent
people, which is what is exactly happening in Israel, so we cannot
afford to repeat that with Muslims.”

She repeats that “excessive victimhood without rationality can have
its side effects which are very damaging for the community and the
world community at large.”

Then she points that we in India are at a very historic moment,
because India, in spite of all its faults, has the opportunity to show
the way to the world. We in India have managed to negotiate and live
together for thousand of years. In spite of social, cultural, religious
and linguistic diversity and differences there are different levels at
which different communities negotiate and live together.

“So why cannot we make it our asset instead of a liability? And I think that’s the language we need to be speaking to people.”

Secularism, state and religion

On the matter of secularism, and the state and its relation with
religion, she says that in India we have to look at secularism from two
levels.

As far as the state is concerned, the state agencies, for instance,
police, government and court cannot compromise on secularism; there
should be complete separation of religion from these agencies.

But when it comes to the society, and the social practices, there
should be equal respects to al the faiths, because the state has to get
support of every one.

She categorically objects to the historical propaganda that, as Home
Minister, Sardar Patel gave money to the Somnath Temple. Teesta says
that it is a completely false idea, a concocted story. In fact Sardar
Patel refused to sanction money for the Temple.

Teesta refers to a letter written by Sardar Patel to the
contemporary Chief Minister of U.P. Gobind Ballabh Pant, saying that it
would be wrong on his part to talk about the Babri Masjid.

Mobilisation of Dalits in communal violence

Teesta also talked about the active mobilization of the Dalits in the riots and pogroms, for instance in Godhra riots itself.

More importantly it is a comparatively recent phenomenon, as earlier
there used to be a gulf between the high castes and the Dalits.

Teesta says that that in India caste has always played a major role.
The higher caste people have managed to mobilize the Dalits and other
low castes, as it is safe to be involved into the riots from a distance.

She gives the example that in the Gujarat riots the actual
perpetrators were the people from Patel community, but they managed to
mobilize the Dalits, and distributed booze among them, and made to do
all that. For instance in Panvela, the tragedy is that rioters were all
OBC boys.

The politics of the communalism and communal violence which is
always orchestrated by the upper caste is that the son of Bal Thackeray
would never go in the “mini Pakistans” to explode bombs. And L.K.
Advani would never participate personally into the riots. But these
people will exhort others to do that, she says.

NDA, UPA and again NDA

Teesta Setalvad points out that the seven years of the NDA
government was not enough and this country will see more years of
Fascism, because of the “betrayal of the secular parties, Congress at
the top.”

She also points out that the NDA government would be more brutal if
it comes to power and she does not see the country escaping one more
round of Fascism, because they have been in the power for seven years,
and within six months of the UPA government it is almost as if we
forgot that the NDA was ever there, and what it meant.

She also says that the Left parties which have been making such a
huge noise on the nuclear deal, did they make such noise on the Gujarat
case. On the political front, she says, she got support from nobody yet
she says, that she knows that had the NDA been in power it would have
been much more difficult.

She says that everybody knows that bureaucracy runs the country. She
questions that, how many police officers, judges and administrative
officers who are affiliated to the RSS have been flushed out by the
UPA? From top to the bottom the system has gone ideologically corrupt.
Even in the Prime Minister’s office there are many people from the RSS.

She says that she is afraid of the two possibilities; either the
entire Congress has turned communal, or at least the dominant part of
it. Or it has decided that now it can do without the minority votes.
Because this message is coming too often, Gujarat gave it brutally.

And if it happens they would be at the real loss because, they don’t
realize that once the minority votes ditches the Congress, it will not
come back with it for the next thirty years as it has happened in Uttar
Pradesh.

The Congress party does not trust Muslims. This is a fact that after
the indifferent behavior of the “secular” parties, some Muslims have
taken refuge in the BJP. When the secular parties will not shelter them
they do not have any option. It is not that Muslims like BJP, but how
else do they survive? She says that this is a very disturbing pattern
started three years back with Godhra where the independent Muslims are
governing Godhra with support from the BJP.

BJP state general secretary A N Radhakrishnan has said that the State
Government was trying to suppress the RSS using the police machinery.

Inaugurating
the SP office march organised by the RSS and affiliated organisations
on Wednesday in protest against the police move to 'banish' RSS
Thrikkovilvattom mandalam sahakaryavah Rajesh by including him in the
goonda list, Radhakrishnan said the Kollam police were trying to
implement "police raj" in the district like in many other parts of the
state.

He said the police officers were behaving like CPM
functionaries. He challenged the police to arrest Home Minister
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son, who allegedly had link with godman
Santhosh Madhavan.

Radhakrishnan said that if the police were
going ahead with the move against RSS workers they would resist it at
any cost. Goonda Act was used to banish RSS leaders like Rajesh. The SP
office march was just the beginning of the agitations against the black
laws, he said.

The march which began from the Taluk Office
junction saw slogans being raised against the black laws and DYFI and
CPM. RSS district prachar pramukh C K Chandrababu, district
sahakaryavah D Suresh and BJP district president Kizhakkanela
Sudhakaran spoke.
