The Government Gag on Social Media and the Growing Un-suppressed Discontent

The recent gagging of the people’s voice via social media last week will forever be registered as a move that has exposed one of the most inefficient machineries of India. It has shown how serious core issues like terror threats and national security are closeted conveniently.

The government has stated that the recent gagging of social media is to prevent any malicious message from getting viral and affecting the peace and harmony of the land. The latest exodus of North East Indians from various cities of India back to their homeland following threatening SMSes has been cited as the main reason. One of the first moves made by them was the banning of bulk SMS for a supposed 15 days. This was followed by the reduction of SMS to 5 per day, which has now been hiked to 20 per day. Soon came the swooping down on social media network with many Twitter profiles including those of Sangh Parvar, Panchajanya, Kanchan Gupta, Shiv Aroor and the blogspots of Dr. Pravin Togadia, Janamejeyan, Bharat Kalyan, Facebook pages of Hindujagriti, Indian Army Fans, etc being blocked.

The Twitter accounts of active ‘tweeters’ that faced the clamp are:

SanghParivar.Org (@sanghpariwar) - 17000 followers

Kanchan Gupta

ShivAroor

Dosabandit (@dosabandit),

Eagle Eye (@eagleeye47),

The voices issuing from the likes of Aljazeera have also been clamped. But will the Indian government kindly issue a notification as to why the links and pages mentioned above have been stifled thus? The government directive merely speaks of blocking. No section of the IT Act or laws under which the decision to block the websites has been stated.

The current issue which led to the curbing of freedom of expression has its roots in the communal violence that erupted in Assam and its echoes and aftermaths in other Indian cities. This happens to be between members of the Muslim community and North East Indians. Where do pro-Hindu groups come into the picture? Or is it part of the government’s well known ‘minority appeasement policy’, where, in order to satiate the fury of those running Islamic anti-social websites, pro-Hindu websites are blocked thus? Is it to maintain a certain balance that these websites have been made scapegoats by the UPA government?

A detailed and careful look of the blocked links will reveal a glaring feature. The speakers behind them have voiced out in loud and clear terms, the inadequacies, fatal flaws and errors of the UPA government spearheaded by Congress. The speakers have been bold enough to expose the UPA on their defective economic policies, escalating instances of scams, blemished preparations regarding national security, stoic silence of Indian Prime Minister etc. The right to be heard by any citizen in a country having a democratic charter is all they have done.

Social networking media has also brought out truths which are otherwise conveniently ignored by mainstream media. It has caught up well with the masses that prefer to “call a spade, a spade”. The gagging of social media has resulted in the removal of 6 Twitter handles that have parodied India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The government should pause and give a careful thought to the scenes that led to the creation of these fake accounts. Those heading the machinery must realize that the frustration of the people in seeing a well educated learned man remaining a mute spectator to the prevailing anarchy of the country has resulted in such profiles.

The current restraint on various Twitter and Facebook profiles and blogspots has not been taken lightly by those behind the scenes. Along with the blackening of display pictures, the ire that has poured out has been thunderous.

§  IIndian Rebellion ‏@reBel1857 : U cant stop those Bangladeshi immigrants but block our voices for raising the issues.

§  MediaCrooks ‏@mediacrooks : Stupid Cong+UPA is so incompetent it cant even Block or Ban properly… and some ppl expect these morons to run a country?

§  ChanakyPandit : Sonia govt. and its paidmedia / AntiHinduMedia have the freedum of speech. Who says freedum of speech does not prevail?

§  AbeGhanta ‏@Vicky_Parmar : GOI you are only adding fuel to the fire by blocking and stuff….do some real productive work to stop corruption

§  Kushan Mitra ‏@kushanmitra : The GoI doesn’t have the balls to go after a true anti-national like Ajmal Badruddin, but it goes after Kanchanda and Shiv instead.

§  Amit Jaiswal Jain ‏@ArkJaiswal : It all started with Asadowaisi’s parliament speech. GOI should block him before taking action on others.

§  Paraya Mard ‏@ParayaMard : GOIBlocks is a silent reckoning to anarchy.

§  ankur347 : They can block my twitter, my FB, my Blog, my Email BUT They can NEVER EVER block the spirit.

There have been other responses by prominent bloggers like centreright.in:

Between August 18 and August 22, 2012, the Fascist Sonia Gandhi led UPA II Government directed ISPs to block several websites and twitter accounts, including mine. While the so called ‘block’ mostly remains ineffectual, it is the intent that counts. Also, it is likely they will resort to even more drastic measures, including arm twisting Twitter Inc. into complying with their block request at a more fundamental level…….

If threatening messages are being circulated via SMS or the internet, the government should rise to identify and take action against the agencies that are behind the plots. An easy deed like suppressing citizens and their voice is hardly the real solution. In fact it adds to the highly inflammable situation lurking beneath a placid exterior. The words of Dr. Pravin Togadia have said it best:

From media I came to know about such a draconian order for BLOCKING Twitter accounts of Sangh Pariwar, Sangh’s magazine Panchjanya, Dr Pravin Togadia, a few veteran journalists & others holding all these responsible for alleged Assam violence! It is like trying to give Metacin Tablet for Cancer instead of treating actual Cancer! Govt is purposely neither BLOCKING Bangla Deshi Infiltrators, nor properly punishing their local supporters who were seen attacking even the police in Mumbai. 3 Crore (30 Million) Bangla Deshi Muslim Infiltrators are spread in various states of Bharat, killing Assam’s original Tribes / Hindus & other Non-Muslims as well as terrorizing Indian citizens including Police & also causing Mass Exodus of North Eastern Indians. But for vote bank, Govt has been protecting them & BLOCKING expression of other citizens of Bharat.
